Dexter National Fish Hatchery and Technology Center
The Dexter National Fish Hatchery and Technology Center is located in southeast New Mexico. It is the only facility in the nation dedicated to holding, studying, culturing, and distributing endangered fish for restocking in waters where they occurred naturally. It is the central component for the protection, restoration, and recovery of the endangered and threatened fishes of the Southwest. Advanced techniques in the restoration and recovery of endangered fish will be enhanced with the completion of an updated facility started in 1995. The Center, in combination with the Mora National Fish Hatchery and Technology Center, is the most progressive technology center for endangered species in the nation. To take the recovery program to a higher level, the Center now has a geneticist on staff and is gearing up to protect listed species by carefully analyzing and selecting brood fish to prevent inbreeding.
