Tredegar National Civil War Center Foundation
The Tredegar National Civil War Center, to be housed in the Gun Foundry of the Tredegar Iron Works, a National Historic Landmark, will be the first museum and learning center in the nation to tell the whole story of the war; that is, to describe the major events from the perspectives of the three main participants?Union, Confederate, and African American. To trace the course of the war from its causes to its legacies, to explore the political, military, social, and economic dimensions of the war, and to show how it shaped the America we know today, is the mission of the Tredegar Center. The museum will exhibit objects and documents lent by our partners (including the Smithsonian Institution, Museum of the Confederacy, U.S. Army, and U.S. Navy) as well as the superb collection of African American artifacts donated by collector John H. Motley. The first, or Gun Foundry, phase of the project builds on the success of the National Park Service?s Richmond Civil War Visitor Center, which opened in 2000 in the Pattern Building at the Tredegar Iron Works. Future phases are on the drawing board but are not the focus of the project at this time.
