While driving through the parks is convenient, biking through them offers opportunities and experiences that bring you closer to wildlife and the land. Often you want to see as much as you can when you visit a park and autotouring is certainly an option. But biking through the park can also accelerate your travel while being easier on the environment and healthier for you. If you are going to cover serious distances consider training before arriving. If you are bringing your own bike, make sure that you choose the right bike. You will want a utility bike for touring on easy trails or the road. The heavier frame will also allow you to attach bags for carrying supplies. For riding the trails you will want a mountain bike that will handle rougher terrain. Be aware the seasonal restrictions may apply and you may need a permit. The difficulty of biking trails will vary considerably. Some paved trails may be available but more often than not you should be prepared for taking mountain biking trails. The difficulty of the trail will determine the skill and equipment needed and will also determine who should participate. Biking activities are available for road cycling, mountain biking or biking on paved trails. Be sure and investigate what type of biking is allowed by contacting the park management office. Biking Tips and Ideas: - Make sure you understand the mechanics of a bike and how to do basic repairs. You will want to be able to fix a flat, adjust the seat and handlebars and work with the chain.
- If possible, take your bike for a good test ride. Hook up all of your gear, just as you will have it on the trip, and ride to get a feel for your endurance capabilities with the weight that you will need to carry.
- Try carrying your bike on your vehicle and make sure you know how to properly secure it for long trips on the interstate and on bumpy roads.
