Camping Food List

You can certainly spend a lot of money on freeze-dried foods for your camping
trip but most of those products are not worth your money and the taste is
horrible! There may not be a camping food aisle in your local grocery store,
but with little imagination you can pick the right food for the trip.
Just keep a few things in mind. Whatever kind of food you prepare you want the
cleanup to be easy. Dishes that you can prepare by simply boiling water are
quick and often you won't even need soap to wash up. Often a grill is available
at campgrounds. A complete meal with vegetables, meat and pasta can be prepared
over a grill. Do keep in mind though that vegetables usually do better over
slow heat which is best achieved with gas instead of charcoal.
Of course, you will want to choose foods that stay fresh for the duration of
your trip. The best tip for this is to use a cooler and eat the most perishable
foods within the first days of your trip. Save your money for a night out at a
restaurant for the night before you head home if you are near one.
Finally, plan your meals carefully and remember that extra calories are
important when your family is active so bring enough for everyone.
General Rules for Outdoor Food Safety
from:
Food Safety and Inspection Service
United States Department of Agriculture
- Plan ahead: decide what you are going to eat and how you are going to cook it; then plan what equipment you will need.
- Pack safely: use a cooler if car-camping or boating, or pack foods in the frozen state with a cold source if hiking or backpacking. Keep raw foods separate from other foods. Never bring meat or poultry products without a cold source to keep them safe.
- Bring disposable wipes or biodegradable soap for hand- and dishwashing.
- Plan on carrying bottled water for drinking. Otherwise, boil water or use water purification tablets.
- Do not leave trash in the wild or throw it off your boat.
- If using a cooler, leftover food is safe only if the cooler still has ice in it. Otherwise, discard leftover food.
- Whether in the wild or on the high seas, protect yourself and your family by washing your hands before and after handling food.
