Caving

You might consider caving as an activity to enjoy when you visit a National
Park. Many parks offer guided expeditions down under and for those with more
advanced skills and equipment you can sometimes obtain permits to venture out on
your own. Caves can be amazing geological wonderlands and you might be surprised
at the wildlife you can observe. To learn more about the adventures of caving
and about protecting the environments and habitats down under, visit
http://www.caving.org/. Caving is also known
as spelunking and speleology
is the scientific study of caves and the cave environment. A guided tour will
provide you with a taste of both. The environment can vary for different types
of caving, some caves being colder and wetter than others. You will want to be
dressed appropriately even if you taking a simple guided tour. Caves are often
associated with cultural history so you do some investigating and learning about
the ones you will be visiting and your trip will be even better.
Caving Tips and Ideas: -
Its a bad idea to venture into any cave alone. You should be with a guide if you
are new to caving and even if you are experienced, someone should be with you
for safety.
-
Unless rangers let you know otherwise, you should only enter a cave with the the
right equipment. The minimum is a hands free lighting system, a helmet and the
proper clothing - water resistant, warm and breathable. A pair of gloves would
be a good idea if you will be getting on your hands and knees.
-
Remember that your cell phone will likely not work in a cave.
-
Take a minimal first aid kit.
- If you
have a cell phone - put an emergency number in your contacts. Name the contact
ICE - in case of emergency.
- Make sure that
you aware of everyone's potential medical needs and that they are aware of
yours.
