Fish Hatcheries

Fish hatcheries help repopulate low fish populations in our nations streams, lakes and rivers. Visiting a fish hatchery is a fun and relaxing way to learn about fish up close. If you are participating in vigorous activities during the rest of your trip to a national park, you might find that visiting a hatchery gives you a chance to rest and learn. Fish hatcheries ensure that fish are available for recreational fishing and to maintain ecosystems. However, fish hatcheries also serve as sites for researching fish habitats, disease threats and life behaviors.

A fish hatchery will contain the fish in an enclosed environment. Usually you will see the fish in various tanks and holding areas that allow for controlling their lifecycle. Workers strip the eggs from the female fish and then mix the male sperm with the eggs to fertilize them. This manual process protects the fertilized eggs from disease or being eaten by a predator. The fish are then raised and released into the waters of our public lands.

Fish Hatchery Tips and Ideas:

  • Many fish hatcheries have aquariums, some exhibit the fish in outside tanks, earthen ponds or even model streams.
  • Fish hatcheries sometimes have exhibits that teach about the local wildlife related to fish habitats.
  • Hatcheries are typically constructed on or near the water source in which the fish will be released.
  • Some hatcheries have ponds that allow fishing.
  • Check for when spawning seasons occur for the fish hatchery. This may be the best time to visit.
