Fishing

Fishing is an exciting sport that can be shared with family members, is financially accessible and it's a great way to see nature. In addition to catching fish you can enjoy a quite time near or on the water watching wildlife and outdoor scenery. There are many types of fishing that you can enjoy on public water including fly fishing in streams, ice fishing on lakes, deep sea fishing off of coastal areas and even bow fishing is legal in many US Parks.

Parks almost always require permits and safety rules on boats are strictly enforced so bring life preservers for everyone if boating.

Fishing Tips and Ideas:

  • Check ahead before your fishing trip to find out what kind of fish are available, what type of bait to use and what type of fishing equipment you may need.
  • Consider camping near your fishing site if facilities are available. This would allow you to get an early start or to stay later. Fishing is often better at these times.
  • You might consider visiting a fish hatchery during your fishing trip.
  • If several people are going with you, remember that not everyone will want to fish the entire time. Have a few ideas for alternative park activities.
  • Make sure you are aware of any regulations that determine whether or not you can keep what you catch.
