No matter what kinds of recreational, leisure and educational activities you enjoy while visiting a National Park, perhaps the best activity you can do is to take sometime and observe wildlife on public lands. By all means, take your camera. You will find countless oportunties for pictures, but don't forget to just stop and look, learn and enjoy. A good idea is to learn about the types and habitats of wildlife that you are likely to see in your destination. A little knowledge will make a big difference in your appreciation of the wildlife. The great thing about wildlife viewing is that it is one of the least expensive pursuits at a National Park. Your success with watching animals or finding plants is mainly determined by your knowledge. Finding something rare and being there to watch a great wildlife event is very rewarding. Of course, most parks offer guides and tours for observing animals and the environment.  

Wildlife Viewing Tips and Ideas:

  • Take some time sit in on one of the educational programs offered at your park.
  • ickly looking up the animals or plants that you come across.
  • Remain on the trails when watching wildlife. You can damage their habitats by going off the trail and you may put yourself in danger.
  • Consider taking a camera that has a telescopic lense. The closer you can zoom in the better your picture will be.
  • Protect your photographic gear from getting wet. You may be travelling across streams and the chance of rain or snow is always a possibility.
  • Take a good pair of binoculars.
  • Dawn and evening are the best times to see animals feeding. Practice with the necessary settings for your camera during these times of day.
  • Investigate the feeding habits, the habitats and the seasonal facts in regards to the type of wildlife you hope to see
